Camping
Make sure you bring your sleeping bag, tent, hammock, tarp, camper or whatever else you prefer to sleep in.
Fishing
No trip to Shanklin’s Ferry is complete without wetting a line into the New River, so make sure you bring your river tackle, kayak and life jacket if you have one, and begin coming up with the stories about the one that got away! Be sure to buy your West Virginia fishing license before the trip! NOBODY will be allowed in the river without a life jacket!
Hiking
Shanklin’s Ferry has hiking trails for all level of hikers. From the old railroad bed to the off the beaten path, there are hikes for everyone but make sure you hike in pairs due to the vastness of the area and the black bears and snakes there.
Bible Study
Each day we will have a time of devotion and bible study related to the wilderness. The purpose of this trip is to get alone with God and fellowship with other men in a setting free of every day distractions.
Weather
The river bank is always colder than expected at night. Be prepared for cold nights, warm days, and the possibility of snow and/or rain. Layer up and bring enough clothes to stay warm.
Disclaimer
Shanklin’s Ferry area is inside the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area. There is no cellphone service, no hospitals, no electricity, no civilization, no pavement, and they don’t even have a Dollar General. This adventure is not for the faint of heart, but it will be very rewarding.
